A while back I sold some eggs to a woman that lived in the city. Her daughter only knew store bought eggs. When her daughter cracked open a farm raised egg and saw the deep yellow yolk she thought something was wrong.

Our rooster count was freezered down to 1 last week. 1 Dark Cornish for next year's breeding. Hopefully he will stay docile, but just to be sure he knows who is boss, I occasionally do some "wing flapping" with my husband's barn coat. If we did not want to breed the Dark Cornish, I am not sure I would keep a rooster, I might find fertilized eggs to put under my banty hen.
A pair of geese are new additions to our place and my husband knows there is a building project somewhere in there for him.

Thanks CeeCee! I've watching Craigs. There haven't been any within an hour's drive yet. I'm hoping I don't have to wait until spring but if I do I'll get one with the replacement layer chicks.

We've had more friendly roosters than mean. I'm firm about nothing being more important than a human's safety. There are too many good birds to tolerate one that's dangerous.

I love your last line! "And fill Steve in". I wish I could just 'fill Lee in', but he won't have it. No more critters shall be added to our family.
I know that he specifically won't fence our property because he knows that animals will magically appear within its perimeters.

Good luck finding a roo. Mine is a pretty darn good boy, but he's not for sale or rent. :)

I do use row cover. It helps retain moisture and warmth. It's pushed back on sunny days so the plants get more light for photosynthesis and the soil can warm up. The winter greenhouses aren't heated. Choose your greens for cold weather growing. There's a tab at the top of the blog that says Cold Greens. They do well. You'll see a drop off from mid December to mid February. There's nothing like going out to a greenhouse, putting your hands in the soil and finding an earthworm - in February!
