Don’t be too alarmed. It’s winter and this is Maine. It will be warmer by the end of the week. The poultry will get corn this morning to help them stay warm. The ducks love to sit on the snow in the sun. This morning I’ll put down two or three flakes of straw for [...]

There are approx. 20 vegetables ordered from Johnny’s that aren’t on this list. If you see something “missing” it either came from Johnny’s, I already have it and maybe don’t grow that veggie. Some of the greens will be seeded into the soil in a four season unheated greenhouse, others will be transplanted and the [...]

I’m in a mood lately. Waste is driving me up the wall, especially when I’m footing the bill. It started when I saw Section 8 apartments being heated at 75*. My freaking house isn’t that warm and I pay my own heating bill. I wanted to say, “Put a sweater on dammit!” And when someone [...]

I live in Talmadge, Maine, 04492. My husband is a town official. He sat down tonight to open today’s town mail and discovered something not quite right. What’s wrong with this picture?
The envelop is addressed correctly. Maine…Ohio…whatever!

This is the only compost pile on the farm this winter. It was mounded up over the top when the first snow fell. The heat from the composting process melted that snow. It’s less than half its size now and probably frozen all the way to the center.

-27* this morning, deadly cold. I’m leaving before 7 am to pick my childhood best friend, Jenn, up in Bangor. She’s coming back for the long weekend. Other than a few hours in July I haven’t seen her in almost 15 years. We’re in touch by phone and email often.
I need to get caught up [...]

The seed orders are finished. I expect the Johnny’s order back by no later than Monday. I eliminated catalogs from three companies because they were either too expensive or tied too closely to Monsanto. I wish Johnny’s were moving away from Monsanto faster but something’s better than nothing.
Six pack prices are going up to at [...]

I’m drawn to the moon. Recent nights have been bright and beautiful thanks to the moon, clear skies and our bright white blanket of snow. You can look out the window at what’s going on, or the complete silence, in the night.

My health is improving by leaps and bounds. I’ll be able to drive again by Monday. I think the side effects of the meds are starting to even out. Monday might bring a lot of blood work so that my doctor can look for answers. Bacterial or fungal? Was it bad luck [...]

Some of the side effects of Levaquin (antibiotic) are insomnia, rapid heartbeat from low blood sugar, nausea and headache. Had ‘em! There are others but I’ll spare you the gory details. I got up at 1 am because I was concerned about my heart beat. A little research turned up the likelihood of low blood [...]
