Maine Nature News

This week’s edition of Maine Nature News is online now.  If you haven’t been to MNN yet this year you’ll see a change.  And, you’ll find a link to photography by Paul Beane.  Paul and his wife Jan are our friends up the road. Paul went to the barn to find a tool bright and [...]

It’s a bit chilly this morning

Don’t be too alarmed.  It’s winter and this is Maine.  It will be warmer by the end of the week.  The poultry will get corn this morning to help them stay warm.  The ducks love to sit on the snow in the sun.  This morning I’ll put down two or three flakes of straw for  [...]

Fedco Order

There are approx. 20 vegetables ordered from Johnny’s that aren’t on this list.  If you see something “missing” it either came from Johnny’s, I already have it and maybe don’t grow that veggie.  Some of the greens will be seeded into the soil in a four season unheated greenhouse, others will be transplanted and the [...]

Waste

I’m in a mood lately. Waste is driving me up the wall, especially when I’m footing the bill.  It started when I saw Section 8 apartments being heated at 75*.  My freaking house isn’t that warm and I pay my own heating bill.  I wanted to say, “Put a sweater on dammit!”  And when someone [...]

Interesting Mail

I live in Talmadge, Maine, 04492.  My husband is a town official.  He sat down tonight to open today’s town mail and discovered something not quite right.  What’s wrong with this picture?

The envelop is addressed correctly.  Maine…Ohio…whatever!

Snowy Compost Pile

This is the only compost pile on the farm this winter. It was mounded up over the top when the first snow fell. The heat from the composting process melted that snow. It’s less than half its size now and probably frozen all the way to the center.

You might have a mouse problem…

if this is what you find in the bathroom cupboard.

Deadly Cold

-27* this morning, deadly cold.  I’m leaving before 7 am to pick my childhood best friend, Jenn, up in Bangor.  She’s coming back for the long weekend.  Other than a few hours in July I haven’t seen her in almost 15 years.  We’re in touch by phone and email often.
I need to get caught up [...]

Seed Orders Are Finished

The seed orders are finished.  I expect the Johnny’s order back by no later than Monday.  I eliminated catalogs from three companies because they were either too expensive or tied too closely to Monsanto.  I wish Johnny’s were moving away from Monsanto faster but something’s better than nothing.
Six pack prices are going up to at [...]

Hey Bloggers!

Good morning Blogger friends!  I’ve been reading your blogs this morning and trying to comment on all of them but Blogger won’t cooperate.  I can read but not comment. I’ll be back!

Blue Jay

Taken from INSIDE, through two glass doors.  I promise, I did not go outside.

Full Moon

I’m drawn to the moon.  Recent nights have been bright and beautiful thanks to the moon, clear skies and our bright white blanket of snow.  You can look out the window at what’s going on, or the complete silence, in the night.

Better

My health is improving by leaps and bounds. I’ll be able to drive again by Monday. I think the side effects of the meds are starting to even out. Monday might bring a lot of blood work so that my doctor can look for answers. Bacterial or fungal? Was it bad luck [...]

Who needs sleep?

Some of the side effects of Levaquin (antibiotic) are insomnia, rapid heartbeat from low blood sugar, nausea and headache.  Had ‘em! There are others but I’ll spare you the gory details. I got up at 1 am because I was concerned about my heart beat.  A little research turned up the likelihood of low blood [...]

Still Sick

I just came back from my doctor’s office.  Bless Jj’s heart. She took me to the doctor and didn’t leave here until after dark. She has a 2 1/2 hour home. I have a high powered antibiotic for 10 days, four days of Prednisone to help with the swelling in my lungs [...]

To Do List

Updated @ 1:55 pm: oops – just remembered I have carrots leftover from last night’s roasted chicken so I am making a pot pie. mmm! comfor food!  Everything else is done so it’s time to hit the couch with the seed catalog and inhaler.
This is a wimpy to-do list for a woman who’s still feeling [...]
