Tomorrow is opening day of white tail season (gun, bow is already open). This afternoon I walked about a half mile into the woods, chose the area with the most traveled deer trails, and set up a spot for myself. I’ve been deer hunting only once; normally I hunt only birds. Until a couple of [...]

I’m not going trick or treating tonight and I’m so excited! I didn’t go last year either and it was great! T or T’ing isn’t all that much fun when you’re the chauffeur and don’t get candy. The houses are so far apart we drive our kids around. It’s hardly any fun to [...]

Update: Kirk’s Calendar came today. The online pics don’t do it justice. It’s fantastic!
Kirk’s Calendar. I love the fawn. It’s a buck. I’m not pushing you to buy, just want to brag on my friend’s talent.

I’ve learned that jakes are like other male species; when there isn’t an adult male to keep them in line they often become bullies.
My farmcollies have dealt with a bobcat, coyotes, domestic dogs, raccoons, spooked horses they stopped in their tracks and bulls. They’ve been breaking up fights between the older toms and the jakes [...]

I don’t put a lot of faith in signs but once in a while they seem to stare me in the face, impossible to ignore. I’ve been sick to my stomach since going to the other house yesterday. The tenant has not yet moved out. I drove on to Calais and filed the court papers. [...]

Late October – what are you eating that was locally grown? How about fresh? Do you have anything growing in your garden or cold frame?
Our potatoes and veggies were grown here but the fish we’re having for supper came from Melissa’s Alaskan honeymoon in July.
I think it’s all done then find things still growing. Broccoli [...]

Rototill. After five weeks, the tiller is back and working.
Put away the seldom-used hoses. I’ll leave enough out to run to the greenhouse.
Wash Maggie. She’s a dirty girl.
Wash out and stack the unused harvest and storage bins for the winter.
Cover the hen house windows.
Rake leaves for compost piles.
Burn weeds. Steve’s picking up a few bales [...]

One more pic from our Saturday drive on the Stud Mill Road.
It’s very windy today. I’d hoped for snow when we got up this morning but heard it raining some time during the night. I don’t want the snow to stay but seeing it for a couple of hours would be ok. The dogs love [...]

It’s a perfect autumn Sunday. The weather is crisp and cool; at 11 am the birds’ waterers were still covered in a half inch of ice. There are shades of yellow and orange leaves on some of the trees. The sky is clear and a brilliant blue. The Delinquents are outside my window, picking up [...]

We met up with new and old friends for lunch today. After lunch we took meds to Sick Kristin then traveled home the Stud Mill Road home. I saw one partridge in a spot I couldn’t shoot, four moose, two beaver and a deer. Right click to see full size.

I’m slowly working on my to-do list. It doesn’t look like much progress has been made but so far so good. I’d like to get one more cord of wood in, finish mucking and if I ever get the rototiller back from the idiman ot who’s supposed to be fixing it, turn in a green [...]

Kristeva left comments here and of course, I had to check her out. Pour a cup of coffee, tea, hot chocolate – whatever – and visit Howling Duck Ranch.

I found a comment on this blog asking if I’d be willing to try Country Bob’s All Purpose Sauce and write a review. Sure, why not? I replied with my name and address and was honestly surprised when the UPS shipping notice arrived in my inbox the next day.
I was skeptical. A lot of BBQ [...]

We put up 46 chickens and three turkeys yesterday. I’ve always “put up” vegetables and fruit but until yesterday hadn’t used that term for birds or animals. I picked it up from Jj and I like it. So – we put up the birds yesterday. I’m pleased with the outcome. One chicken was fat. I’m [...]

It’s almost time to start (ok, so I’ve started already) thinking about a farmcollie puppy. Maggie will be 11 in a few months. Sebastian is eight and Scooter is seven. Scooter’s age really hit me when I noticed a few days ago that he’s getting gray. Sebastian has been gray for years but Scooter, well, [...]
