Kyle missed Maine. Other than 4″ of rain, he was a non-event here. There was a little flooding north of us thanks to their 6.25″ of rain but the roads must have cleared over night, the kids up there went to school.
I’ve had a great morning. The birds are fed and watered. The meat birds [...]

Annie asked about Dad in her blog today. It reminded me that I haven’t mentioned him. Dad’s blood sugar is below 200 now thanks to insulin. He’s building up the doseage a small amount each day. He has feeling in his feet! He said they feel “half human.” I’m so relieved.
Frost has wiped out just [...]

<insert sing songy voice here> I did it! I did it!
Ok, stop singing now. It’s a little annoying. Steve looked around for sweet potatoes while I dug whites to mash for supper. I didn’t dig deeply enough the other day. And for some reason I was thinking they’d grow horizontally. They’re vertical, like…you [...]

A sign at Common Ground Fair.
This week is off to a frosty start. It was 28* when I woke. I haven’t thought ahead too much about this week so I’ll think outloud here. Volleyball game today, Wednesday and Friday. Today and Friday are away games so I’ll leave here by 1:30-2 pm. I like away [...]

We went to Common Ground Fair yesterday. The weather was perfect, neither too warm or cool; breezy but not windy. Farmers Market was wonderful. Steve bought Macoun apples. I bought dry dill that smells wonderful and gourds for fall decorating.
MOFGA isn’t active in Washington county so I won’t be renewing my membership this fall. I’ll [...]

One Hose + One Dandruff Shampoo bottle + Three dogs = One wet woman. I didn’t wake up planning to scrub the mutts but they’re sort of clean now. I took mercy on them and did a half-assed job. The water from the well is 54* right now so I didn’t wash between toes and [...]

Another busy week. I don’t think I have a full day at home all week.
Extra sauce. The canner is full so this jar goes into the fridge to use later in the week.

I’m thinking back and trying to recall details as I write. We’ve almost always had ducks. It seems like the first spring but maybe it was the second. The first batch of ducklings was a complete disaster. The first creature I ever put down was one of those suffering ducklings. We later learned Blue Seal [...]

EDITING TO ADD: READ THIS WITH A SENSE OF HUMOR. I AM NOT COMPLAINING.
So far this afternoon, and mind you, it’s only 12:52 pm, I have managed to:
rototill small garden
break the rototiller
fix the rototiller
unearth a meadow vole
let dogs in the garden so Scooter can eat said rodent
rototill a little more
break the rototiller
fail to fix [...]

No frost. 39* but no frost. The pumpkins get more time to ripen.

I didn’t pay attention last year. “Not us…” I was wrong. Not only did we get a frost, it was a killing frost. I’m listening this time and – bring it on! I’ll be ready. I’ll pick the last of the tomatoes, tomatillos and peppers and put a row cover over the broccoli to just [...]

Excedrin at 4 am will do wonders for the amount of work I get done. I got up with Steve this morning and couldn’t get back to sleep when he left at 4 am. My head hurt so I took an Excedrin and drank a cup of coffee. It doesn’t look like a lot yet, [...]

I should write something. I know I haven’t written in a while when friends email to ask if I’m ok. I am ok. Last week was crazy. The work week started late because of Labor Day. Tuesday got away from me. Wednesday and Thursday were busy but I don’t remember why now. Friday took me [...]

It’s a kitchen day. I’ll run outside soon to do a little yard work and enjoy the beautiful weather then it’s back to the kitchen. I picked two gallons of blackberries at camp yesterday. They’ll be muffins, jam and jelly by the end of the day. Tomatillo salsa, tomato soup and stewed tomatoes are also [...]
