Ravens

Some mornings I’d like to stick a long piece of iron out the bedroom window, pull the trigger (the iron would be part of a shot gun, btw), and bring peace and quiet back to the farm.  Ravens are pushing their luck at 3:45 am.  It’s barely light out then and really, couldn’t we sleep [...]

And, another odd day

It rained no it didn’t but it tried it misted and sprinkled and gees would the weather please make up its mind?  We worked outside most of the day.  A nice couple came for seedlings.  I broke into my “just in case” stash of seedlings and sold seven six packs.  The couple who paid for [...]

Another Rainy Day

Pass the global warming, please.  Does anyone want my climate change?  This is our third consecutive cool, damp summer.  We had a brief period of very hot, dry weather but over all it’s damp and cool.  Damp doesn’t provide enough water for deep root growth so I’m watering.  The forecast is cool for the next [...]

Grocery Store Vegetables

I needed to pick up tea bags so I made a quick trip to the grocery store after a meeting this afternoon.  Good Lord who can afford to eat from the grocery??

Carrots – bagged, not fresh, from California.  .99/lb
Broccoli – $1.99/lb.  Starting to flower, soft.
Tomatoes – Not ripe, hard, $1.79/lb.  That’s less than I’ll be [...]

Photo Day

I have deadlines this week so my writing time has gone to things that pay.  Here’s what’s going on at the farm this week.

Pet millipede vs food

Pet millipede vs food.  Comments crack me up sometimes.  Pet…food….pet…food.  What was I thinking???  Who needs food when we can all have a pet millipede.  I showed a photo of millipede damage and ruined Brittany’s plans.

Brittany, on June 24th, 2008 at 11:01 pm Said:
Thanks a lot. Due to people like you complaining, there was recently [...]

Cow in Baxter State Park

I stood 15′ from her.  The man I was standing with annoyed her by using his flash.  You can see her ears laid back in the second photo.  He turned it off and she relaxed and was still standing still when we finished and walked away.  Smaller monitors might have to right click and chose [...]

Busy Saturdays

Saturdays are proving to be busier than I expected.  I’ve sold seedlings, greens and poults.  There are only four six packs of tomatoes left, less than a bushel of greens and no poults until/unless there’s another hatch. The last customer left at 4 pm.  It’s time to put the new OPEN flag out to get [...]

Welcome Summer!

A new blog worthy of note:  Health Food Made Easy.
This is the last morning of spring, 2008.  I filled two orders first thing.  One is greens and eggs and the other for seedlings to replace cutworm damage.  On the first morning of summer I’ll fill orders for poults, eggs and greens.  I love mornings!
I took [...]

Thanks

Yesterday was a very long day.  Donna’s surgery went well.  She’ll be going home this morning.  I think it’s much too early but she wants to be home, Dad wants her home and her nurse tried to assume me that she’ll be fine.  “My elderly aunt had this done.  She was home eating pizza the [...]

Happy Birthday Taylor!

Today is Taylor’s birthday!
My baby is 15.  She’s just finished her freshman year of high school with and Honor award and a recognition of achievement in Algebra II.  She’s a sophomore now, taking driver ed and playing volleyball in the fall, and turning into a very strong willed (in a good way!) young woman.

Rainy Day Plans

I could use some good thoughts for tomorrow. =( My step-mom is having a serious surgery early tomorrow morning. I’ll be leaving here around 5 am.
Out of the blue I received a phone call from my childhood best friend Sunday night. Our lives are so different that we drifted apart 14 years [...]

Scholarships

Have any of the farmers who read here established a scholarship program?  We’re going to do this so I’m interested in hearing what others have done or are thinking of doing.  We’ll be giving at least one $500 scholarship to a student moving into advanced education in agriculture, ecology, forestry or a similar industry being [...]

Customers

As much as I love working the soil, watching seeds turn into vegetables and good food, I love my customers.  This year I’ve been blessed with many new customers and wow, do I enjoy them!
B came two weekends ago.  She found us on Local Harvest and came out just to find us, not to stop. [...]

Greenhouse Thoughts

The greenhouse is now officially closed. It’s time to bring in the sign, find places for what’s left and add to the compost pile.  These are notes I’ve made for next year.
Don’t bother with tatsoi and bok choi.  People will buy it at the farmstand but don’t want to grow either.
People plant late.  Start [...]

Happy Birthday Kirk!

So, it’s official.  Kirk’s another year older.  No old mind you, just olllllllldddderrrrr.
Happy Birthday!

Maine Nature News

Maine Nature News is online.  This week’s edition is a little worrisome.  I’m going to do something that has never been done on MNN – advertising.  As my business changes I have less time for tedious work like the black fly report.  When there are 20-30 reports I spend at least two hours looking up [...]

Making Do

Alan is here to till for me. He helped me catch the mother duck again and put chicken wire over the pen. The pen is a make-do pen for a while. I wasn’t prepared so I threw together four bales of mulch hay and called it good. I’ve chased these guys [...]
