Thursday!

This week has gone by quickly. I spent most of the morning outside. I’m a little restless due to not having hundreds of wreaths to make. Rather than face the dreaded treadmill I found some heavier duty work to do. I moved all of the dry cedar from the drive way [...]

Wreath!

I still needed to make a wreath for the door and since Steve had mentioned the double rail I thought I’d try it. A double rail is two rings with a 1.5″ separator welded between the rings to hold them together. I underestimated the size of the finished wreath. This doesn’t fit [...]

Organic Really Is Better

shhh…it’s wordless Wednesday.  I’ll get to that.  This article is informative.

Today’s Harvest

I spent a lot of time around the greenhouse and a little time in it today.  Around it to clean up poly, look for screws and nuts and other things we missed when cleaning up, and hauling the black plastic I used to control mint in the garden to the trash can.  I was inside [...]

As for the mean rooster…

YLB is gone.  I looked out the kitchen window while doing dishes yesterday to see Steve trying to grab the rooster.  “If he catches you you’re dead.”  When Steve started to walk to the hen house to get a metal pole the rooster went after him.  One knock to head put him down but didn’t [...]

Thanksgiving Dessert

Melissa, Jon, Robbie and Amanda are coming for dessert today. They had Thanksgiving dinner at Jon’s son’s home. Shaun and Jess just bought a house and celebrated their first holiday there. Melissa is making cheesecake. I’m making pumpkin pie and fresh whipped cream, have veggies, crackers, cheese and dips, and lots [...]

Sunday Morning

Back again! I have three batches of sour dough bread in the works. Whole wheat, pumpernickel and oatmeal. I had enough dough to make rolls for burgers and sandwiches. Jan showed me the right size dough ball for rolls so these should turn out better than my first try.  Top left [...]

Quiet Morning

I’ve been up since 5:01 am.  A hot cup of coffee is on the antique chest that serves as a coffee table.  The fire is going again and it’s beginning to warm the house.  18* this morning.  The moon is bright and beautiful as it sets.
Jan called yesterday to be sure I was home before [...]

Congratulations! We Have Winners!

Congratulations to Mallory in Mississippi and Janice in Kentucky!
I’ll be making the wreaths tomorrow (Saturday) and will get them in the mail to you.

Thanks to everyone who entered.  Merry Christmas!

Stuffing. Or is it Dressing?

Fair warning – I seldom follow a recipe and this is no exception.
Like everything else, I make stuffing from scratch.  There’s no recipe for my stuffing bread. Make the bread no less than five days before you’re going to make stuffing. I make a normal white/wheat bread and add:  sage, thyme, rosemary, salt and pepper [...]

Mincemeat

I put up the mincemeat this afternoon. It’s very good! Next time I’ll use a little less molasses. I cut the sugar to a little more than half of what was called for and am glad I did. Biting into an apple or raisin is sweet enough. I’ll definitely make [...]

Today On The Farm

The meat chickens are now in the basement freezer.  The average weight is 5.95 pounds.  They were ten weeks old.
The Thanksgiving turkey is 17.81 pounds.  The freezer turkey is 20something.  I sent it to the freezer before I looked at the weight.
I have a new restaurant account.  The owner/chef is coming here next week to [...]

Just A Typical Monday (Vent warning)

The tenant called this morning while I was out. Voice mail: “………..and I think we need a new furnace.” <insert ranting, raving and bitching about things I won’t say here> No, I don’t think so <because of the things I’m not ranting, raving and bitching about here>. We will close [...]

It’s Good To Be The Boss

Tom is the reigning supreme turkey again.  Junior and Stoopid are now residing in freezer bags in the shed.  It’s 21°.  Junior and the chickens will continue to freeze til noon when they’re moved to the basement freezers.  Stoop’s coming in to thaw in the fridge.  He’s invited to dinner Thursday.  Actually, it’s more than [...]

Not On the Road Today

UPDATED: 1:07 p.m.  Visited with Jay and Jilly for a while.  Then Jan came to bring whole wheat flour so freshly ground it was still warm.
Paula’s husband, also Steve, went with her today so I’m home for the day, ready to tackle my long list of things to do.

cut up roast I put in the [...]

On the Road

I’m on the road tomorrow to Greaney’s Turkey Farm. First thing in the morning we’ll load two pens with chickens and one kennel with two turkeys. Scott called back quickly and fit me in after Paula’s chickens are done. I’ll meet her in the morning. The appointment is at 1:30 p.m. [...]

Stood Up

Argh!  I’ve been stood up by the butcher.  I waited for the call telling me when to bring them.  When it didn’t come I called, left a message and waited.  Nothing.  Paula’s been stood up too.  I’ve called Scott at Greaney’s Turkey Farm to call me back, most likely not until tonight.  If he can’t [...]

Predator Control

I thought when I got home at 10:20 last night that I’d trapped the coon. It wasn’t trying to get into the barn or rolling pumpkins around on the porch. Most telling, the ducks were calm and quiet. They haven’t been calm at night for at least three weeks. I never [...]

A Great Day!

I had a great day!  After chores and a shower I headed off to Paula’s home.  We met with the editor of Quoddy Tides to pitch a new column.  The meeting went well.  The column debuts December 14.  We’ll be writing about agriculture – what is and isn’t organic, eating locally and seasonally, resources and [...]

Remember that proposition?

Remember me being propositioned?  I’m meeting with the editor/publisher tomorrow morning.  He’s “intrigued.”  I’ll meet Paula at 9:15 a.m.  Cross your fingers, toes and eyes for me!
